From the recording Songs from the Vault 1985-1995

"You Were the One" was my dear Mother's favorite song. I wrote it in 1984 after coming home off the road. A real good friend of mine called and was crushed because his girlfriend had broken up with him. We all thought the two of them would be together forever. His heart was broken and I really felt for him, not only because he was a dear friend, but because I had recently gone through a tough break up as well. My very first version of this song was recorded on a cassette 4 track and I've lost it. This is a version that was done a few years later and my good buddy Dave Simmons played drums on it.
I remember meeting one of my singing idols, Gary Puckett...and asked him if he would listen to it. I sent him several tunes..but this was the one he wrote me back about. It was a real handwritten note...that I've since lost! sigh... It was a beautiful note telling me he loved the song but that I should submit it to Gary Morris...which I never did.

Lyrics

You Were the One
© 1987 Sol Knopf

Somewhere tonight a love has gone away
And I am the one who’s left alone
Somehow I knew
Things would come down to you
You were the one, you were the one

I gave you my heart
But time has taken it’s toll
All those years was it true love?
I wish I knew what was going on inside of you
You were the one, you were the one

Lost through the window of stormy lullaby
Wanting you so bad and knowing I’ll never
Get you back

I want you to know
I will always love you
There’s a place in my soul that’s truly yours
I wish I knew if you felt the same way too
You were the one, you were the one
I wish I knew
If you felt the same way too
You were the one, you were the one
